As a connoisseur and someone who is fascinated by the many different forms of jewelry, I am always trying to keep up to date with all the current trends and I must say that I’m hearing more and more about promise rings as of late.

Of course I’ve heard of them before, but they seem to be a trend on the upswing. Therefore, I must investigate further to find out — what exactly is a promise ring?

The technical definition of a promise ring is, “a ring that is indicative of a promise made to oneself or another,” and is not to be taken lightly.

This type of ring may be given to a romantic partner to signify a serious commitment without actually getting married, or it is exchanged by lovers who eventually intend to get married. This may be because they are not currently able to do so due to age or circumstance. As custom goes, the female is given the promise ring from the male.

Traditionally, students would use their class ring as a promise ring, although this is becoming decreasingly common.

Although it may seem that promise rings are just for significant others, this is not the case. They may also be exchanged between best friends to signify loyalty, or they can be given to oneself as a reminder of a personal promise.

Basically, a promise ring is indicative of a vow to oneself or another.

Here is a list of some of the basic meanings:

• “I will be faithful to you”

• “I will return to you”

• “I will keep you in my heart always”

• “I intend to marry you one day”

• “We are best friends”

• “I will always be there for you”

• “I love you”

• “I will remain abstinent until we are married”

• “I will not dishonor you nor myself”

Promise rings come in a wide variety of forms, including simple bands, gemstone promise rings, diamond promise rings, poesy rings, purity rings, sterling silver, white gold, stackable promise rings, Turkish promise rings, and yellow gold promise rings.

Promise rings have been a part of the process of commitment of marriages and betrothals for hundreds of years.

Originally promise rings were given to signify that an understanding had been made between two families. The giving of the promise ring was a symbol that the couple were promised to each other, the families had agreed, and at some stage, the happy couple were bound to be wed.

Promise rings have been known by various names throughout history. In the 16th and 17th Centuries, rings were given between lovers and became known as “scribbling rings”. These rings symbolized love, and the uncut diamonds set in these rings were used to etch romantic poetry into window panes or mirrors.

Speaking of poetry, another popular form of promise ring was the “poesy ring” , or love poem ring, which had romantic sayings or lines from poems engraved upon them. These were well used in the 17th Century in both France and England.

What is a modern promise ring? In recent times promise rings are seen as a sign of a commitment. Generally, this can often be a commitment or promise between a couple who are not yet engaged. Promise rings are usually less costly than an engagement ring and often feature heart settings or heart shaped stones. Colorful gems are often used instead of diamonds, to keep the rings more cost effective, and also to look less like an engagement ring.

A promise ring poem can be engraved on the outer or inner side of the band. Popular inscriptions can be derived from Latin, Italian, Spanish, French, Irish, or Old English sayings. Excerpts from songs or religious statements can also be used. Popular promise ring inscriptions include ” My Beloved”, “Vous et nul Autre” which translates to “You and no Other”, “Yours Only”, “Of my Love be Sure” and “Anam Cara” which translates to “Soul Friend”.

Promise rings can also be engraved with ancient symbols, and Celtic knots and swirls, for extra embellishments and meanings. Promise rings are generally made in more affordable metals such as sterling silver or gold.
