Funny Groom Speech

Despite my earlier advice on avoiding jokes and alcohol, funny groom speeches are one of the great things about any wedding speech. It doesn’t mean you have to produce a work of comic genius, but a funny groom speech is sure to go down a blast with your audience – so long as it is relevant and tasteful. The last thing you want to do is offend anyone.

I tried to make mine funny but all the while I was aware of the situation and tried to be humble. I also had to consider the other wedding speakers like the father of the bride so that I didn’t pull the rug from under him or insult his daughter! The Secret to Good Speech Humour

One thing I found was that by using humour, it seemed to keep everyone’s attention and engaged them emotionally in what I was saying. I used it at different times as a way of grabbing attention and making sure they were focused. In any toast, the groom should be the centre of attention and keep it that way, as well as directed onto his bride, of course!

Try injecting your speech with a joke or two in the right place. Say emotional things, then add a little humour to keep everyone relaxed and focused. Balance the emotional parts and the funny bits together. You will actually find that you will be emotional yourself so by doing this it won’t just help the audience, it will help you too!

Another great funny groom speeches tip I learned is to be informal and interact with the audience. This isn’t a lecture – it’s a toast! The groom should always feel like they are having a conversation with old friends, which largely will be the
case. Don’t forget to make eye contact with your guests; it will help you to interact them. Try practising before hand with your friends as a trial run, as it will help you improve your funny groom speech skills greatly and give you extra confidence.

The great thing about many groom wedding speech examples is that they are designed to let you fill in the blanks and still create a totally unique wedding speech. I have found they work best by giving example layouts and prompts as follows:

• Who to thank
• Stories you can tell
• The feelings of your big day
• Funny anecdotes or Jokes
• Your bride’s personality
• Ways of getting the audience involved

These are just some of the elements that the wedding speech examples I found included. However, I thought I would include the following as well, as there is a bit more detail to the prompts:

• Start with “On behalf of my wife and I”…
• Thank the guests for joining you on this special day and for their gifts and support
• Thank and compliment your wifes parents
• Thank your parents for being there and putting up with you all those years – present their gifts
• Thank the best man for being a freind all these years and how much he has helped (tell a joke if appropriate)!
• Thank Bride – Your chance to publically declare your love and freindship
• Thank the brides maids and maid of honor. Say what a great job they have done – present gifts
• Propose a toast to the bridesmaids before handing over to the best man

Though I had read in many places what successful elements grooms wedding speeches should include, having them there in an ordered layout meant I couldn’t go wrong. What you will also find with these examples is that they help you stick to the point and stop anyone nodding off!. But don’t rush your speech either, it’s your day too. Just don’t dwell one topic for too long.

Use a very strong opening.

The battle is half won if you begin your best man wedding speech with an interesting start. Keep it informal. Welcome people to the evening and then say a warm line about who you are and how you are related to the bridegroom. Then follow it up with a joke or an amusing fact about the bridegroom. You must actually make an effort for this icebreaker line, and it is not at all a bad idea to think about it for a couple of days before the wedding and even have a couple of rehearsals in front of some close people.

Speak of your relations with the bridegroom.

You have to emphasize on the fact why you are the best man. But of course, you are not going to say that in as many words! All you have to do is to speak about some of the common experiences you and the bridegroom shared together. This must come after you speak briefly about the academic and professional qualifications of the groom. Tell about the nature of the bridegroom. Use some adjectives here, but not the generic run-of-the-mill kind. Through your speech, your relationship with the bridegroom must be reflected.

Do not leave the bride out.

A common mistake done during most best man wedding speeches is that the poor bride is always relegated to a sideshow. You must not commit that if your time comes. But it sounds good if you speak from the bridegroom’s perspective. Like, say about the time he told you for the first time about her, what his expectations and expressions were, etc. Speak about special moments you know of, such as when the groom was thinking to get a present for his bride to-be. Take this moment to impress upon the bride how much the groom actually cares for her, and even let the listeners know that there is good romance blossoming among the couple.

Do not forget your etiquette.

A best man wedding speech is not all about speaking. You have to remember all your manners and etiquette, especially since all eyes in the hall will be on you. Rehearse yourself on where to stand on the dais, how to hold the glass, how to make eye contact with the people you are speaking with, general body movements, etc. It is also good if you do some voice practice, so that your voice comes out in the right pitch when you speak. Most importantly, do not forget to cheer the bridal couple (you will be surprised at how many best men forget to do this important thing, mostly due to nervousness) and have your own toast. It will be immensely awkward for you if you raise the toast for everyone and then walk off the podium without having yours!

Giving a best man wedding speech is not easy and those few moments in the bridal spotlight can be quite nerve-wracking. But it is a way of showing your solidarity with the bridal couple and it is a great honor. You, on your part, should take this seriously and make a great speech for all the listeners, including the bridal couple, to remember for years to come.
